WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS
The Winter Concert on Wednesday was our biggest highlight of the week.  Our Kinderbees and Mrs. White’s Can Do Kids did an outstanding job. It was their first experience on a big stage with an even bigger audience.  They were wonderful performers and were respectful listeners which helped to make a great audience. We hope you enjoyed the show!
Santa Lucia Day
On Thursday, December 13th,  we celebrated Santa Lucia Day by bringing gingersnap cookies to our friends in the 1st and 2nd grade and singing a short version of a traditional song, “When in the darkest night, enter with candelight, Santa Lucia,  Santa Lucia.” We enjoyed dressing up with handmade paper hats and holly crowns. Our very own Lucia dressed in a white gown with a red sash to portray Santa Lucia who lived in the fourth century in Sweden.
Math: From the beginning of the year in Morning Meeting our math activities involve daily counting. For instance, when counting our number of classmates at school during attendance and the Number of Days in school (as we approach 100).  We use Unifix cubes to count and gather and straws  to count and bundle together to make tens.
This week we began to learn how to represent numbers of objects using this strategy by physically grouping them and then drawing them on paper.  Math Activities: I hope the Everyday Math Home Link activities makes sense.  Additional math activity ideas will be sent home each week. Let me know if you have any questions.
Phonics:  This week’s Jolly Phonics lessons introduced two new vowel combinations /ee/ and
/or/.   They are making great progress. Keep up the at home practice!
Explorations:  Painting continues to be a big highlight.   The children are really enjoying the opportunity to paint and are learning how to clean up afterward.
Keira shares her pinecone treasure from nature.
Share:  We enjoyed wonderful shares from nature.  Among the many shares, we had rocks, gemstones, and pinecones.   Next week share theme will be the same. We are talking about the beginning sounds of each share and making connections to the letters that make those sounds. Please help your child choose something that comes from nature.  It can be something they find outside or treasure from nature they already have.

WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS
In Science/Language Arts, we have been learning about living things. More specifically, how to compare people (animal kingdom) and trees (plant kingdom).  We read  Are Trees Alive? by Debbie Miller.  In it, we learned to consider how our legs and body are like the trees trunk, and our arms are like the trees branches, our head is like the trees crown, our blood is like a tree’s sap, our skin is like the tree’s bark and more! The children each chose one aspect, and wrote and illustrated their sentence.  We will be making a class book from the originals and I will make copies to send home.
We also have been learning about animals and how they adapt to the changing seasons. While we need to dress more warmly this time of year, (please send in your child with hats!) and many of us have harvested our gardens and have stored our veggies in our pantry and maybe even the freezer, some animals also store foods, some migrate, and some hibernate.   We read a special issue of Scholastic’s “Let’s Find Out” about different animals who hibernate and then chose an animal to write about where they may hibernate.  Your children are learning to tap out their words as they write them,  practice reading what they write, while also checking to see if it makes sense.  They are also learning to consider what they will illustrate to support the words that are written.  These are very complex tasks.  Their effort and hard work deserves our recognition. Bravo Kinderbees!
Paige loves to paint!
Phonics:  This week’s Jolly Phonics lessons introduced two new vowel combinations /oa/ and
/ie/.   As we practice the sounds and sight words together as a whole group, I can see they are practicing at home and are doing nicely.  We are beginning to tap out words that have only 2 sounds but three letters (as in “tie”) and three sounds but 4 letters (as in “coat”)! In the next few weeks I plan to introduce small predictable books for them to begin to read.   These vowel combinations will help them tackle words with these vowel patterns. Keep up the great work!
Math Activities: I sent home Math Home Link Activities to help guide you at home to help your child develop an understanding of a variety of math concepts.  Let me know if you have any questions.
Explorations:  This week I introduced painting to our explorations.  The children are really enjoying the opportunity to paint in a large format on the easel.  They also are enjoying  the WikiStix, building with Legos, housekeeping, blocks and clay.  We have been learning how to work together better on group projects by using our words.  Please help your child resolve their problems using their words and asking for help.  This is a strategy we are working to develop at school. They don’t always know are to articulate their frustrations, but modeling it form them can help.

Chance paints his his favorite tractor -- John Deere.
Share:  We enjoyed a week of great /r/ shares.  Among the many shares, we had rocks, a stuffed rabbit and rat, and even a rhinoceros.    Next week share theme will be something they want to share from nature.  We will discover the sound it begins with and keep a record/tally. Please help your child choose something that comes from nature.  It can be something they find outside or treasure from nature they already have.

Weeks 12 & 13: November 30, 2012

Stella and Bryant at the Friendship Feast.

News
WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS
Change is happening all around us.  As the weather begins to get colder we have begun to make preparations for the season of shorter days and longer nights.  At home we may have harvested our gardens, tucked our gardens in their beds, and exchanged our lighter clothing for warmer ones in our closets and drawers.  At school we are learning about these changes along with the seasonal celebrations that are enjoyed this time of year.
Last week we celebrated Thanksgiving with Mrs. White’s class by singing songs and participating with a Thanksgiving Friendship Feast.  We are learning about the signs of fall or autumn which will continue our study of Living Things.  Next week we will be studying trees (plants) and comparing them to the animal kingdom (people).
Tylor labels his picture.

Language Arts:  This past week we completed our fourth and final English Language Arts Assessment: Comprehension.  We read The Bear Under the Stairs, by Helen Cooper.  The children are learning to retell stories, thinking about sequencing: the beginning, middle and end.  They also had to think about how they might be similar or different to the main character.  We learned how to label our pictures by drawing a line to an object in the picture and writing it’s name.  They worked very hard to complete this lengthy assessment and I am very proud of their work.
Phonics:  This week’s Jolly Phonics lessons introduced the vowel combination /ai/ and the consonant /j/.  As we add new sounds to their sound book, please continue having your child practice their actions and sounds on a daily basis.  It will help with their fluency as we begin to learn to blend the sounds to make words.
On Thursday, I sent home a new Sight Word practice activity.  Over the past few weeks I have introduced several sight words.  We will continue to add new words on a weekly basis.  Similar to the Sound Book, it will be important to practice these Sight Words daily to improve their fluency.  They are excited to learn new words and use them in their writing.
Games and activities: I hope you have enjoyed playing Memory Sound Game. If you would like your child to play the Memory Game at home, please send in a note and I will send it home in their bag.  I am beginning to send home tins of
c-v-c (consonant-vowel- consonant) words that your child can sound out.  If they get stuck have them say and do the actions for each sound and then blend the sounds together.

Tylor and Tanner chew their carrots
like beavers through a log.
Nature’s Carpenter’s: Beavers  Thank you to our ELF parent volunteers, Lori Beland, Keith Bryant, Stacey Wilber, and Dave Brodeur (Zeb’s dad from the 2nd grade). On Thursday we were treated a fantastic lesson on Beavers.  We learned a lot about these incredible oversized rodents: how they grow, what they eat, and how they build their dams.  We learned about how their bodies are adapted to their survival.  We enjoyed a puppet show, and dressed Lucia up to look like a beaver.  Then we built our own dams using playdough and sticks and tested it with water.   As a final activity we pretended to be beavers by chewing through a carrot stick (instead of a log). The kids enjoyed eating the carrots, even the ones who always turn their noses up at carrots at snack!  Surprises will never cease.  :)

Legos and Kindos learning to share and be fair.
Explorations:  This week our explorations included a WikiStix and Legos. We have been learning how to working together better on group projects by using our words.  Cooperative play and work is an important aspect of every kindergarten classroom. In the picture above we are working on sharing space, sharing toys, and asking for pieces and help.

Share:  We enjoyed a week of great /p/ shares.  Next week share theme is the sound /r/. Please brainstorm with your child some things that begin with the sound /r/ and help them choose a share that fits our theme.

CALENDAR:
  •  December 12th, 6:30-7:30: Happy Holiday Season Concert:  Please plan on arriving by 6:15pm.  You should bring your child to our classroom and then you can get a seat in the auditorium.  After the concert we will go back to our room and you can pick your child up there.  More information will be available on the school website in the coming weeks.

Rockin' it!

HOUSEKEEPING ITEMS:
  •  Group Snack: Thank you to Morgan’s family for contributing this week’s healthy snack! We enjoyed wonderful snacks throughout the week with homemade muffins and pumpkin bread and pretzels and Cheddar Popcorn.   Next week’s snack will be provided by Isaac’s family.  I can’t thank you all enough for all your help in making this work so well.
  • Outerwear:  The colder weather is here! If snow falls, please send in winter boots, mittens, and hats. Please help your child learn to zip up their jackets on their own.  It will help us get them ready to go outside more easily.

Sowing seeds and measuring the rows,
and in the spring we'll be checking on it as it grows.

Kinderbees
News

WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS
Many thanks to Maeve’s parents, Kerry Leslie and Stephen Gawalt, for the 5 large buckets of compost, bale of hay and spinach seeds for our Kinderbee Garden of Green.  We enjoyed working for the past few weeks digging up the perennial gardens, digging holes, and turning the soil.  I read Tomie dePaola’s, Strega Nona’s Harvest, a Thanksgiving story about gardening,  (following directions!), and generosity.  We used a ruler to help guide us to sow the spinach seeds in rows,  and then tucked them gently under a bit of soil and flakes of hay.  Because the beds were made with pressure-treated wood I asked the Farm to School group to organize students to perform a soil test to ensure it’s safety.  They enlisted the 6th grade.  I will share the results when they come in.
Now that we tucked the garden into bed, we will wait patiently for the warm breezes in spring to plant more rows of spinach and/or other veggies. It is my hope we can harvest them before we break for summer.

Phonics & Journal Writing:  We had a very full week learning new letter sounds and letter names. We introduced two vowels /o/, /u/ and two consonants /g/ and /l/.  Lessons reinforced the understanding of vowels and consonants.  We are practicing writing more and learning to tap out sounds to write short words and use our Writer’s Gum to write longer words.

Language Arts & Phonics: I hope you have enjoyed playing Memory Sound Game that was sent home last week. If you missed it and/or didn’t have time to play, let me know and I will pack it in your child’s Ziplock so you can play next week.  Also coming home soon will be tins of c-v-c (consonant-vowel- consonant) words that your child can sound out.

Getting to Know Cookie First Hand.
Cookie the black and white calf:    Two weeks ago the K-2 students elected “Cookie” as the winning name for Kelly Meacham’s calf.  She visited us on Wednesday.  We went outside to greet her.  She enjoyed meeting us and letting us pet her.

Share:  We enjoyed a week of free shares:  /f/ox, /f/rog, chain /s/aw, /c/amera, /b/ear.   Next week share theme is the sound /p/. Please brainstorm with your child some things that begin with the sound /p/ and help them choose a share that fits our theme.

We have been enjoying the warmer weather and continue to get outside for run-arounds and recess, and even a snack.
Snack time in the sunshine.

CALENDAR:

  • Tuesday, November 19th: The Kindergarten wing is planning a Thanksgiving Friendship Feast on Tuesday, 11/19 at 1:45pm which is the last period of the day.  We are asking that children bring in a piece of fruit (or can) -- please no pineapple as someone has a allergy sensitivity.   We will be learning about the origins of Thanksgiving and learning how to express our own thanks.
  • No School on Wednesday-Friday next week. There will not be a newsletter next week, but look for photos and some editorial on our classroom web page.  Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

Chance helps prepare the strawberries.

HOUSEKEEPING ITEMS:
  • Group Snack: Thank you to Chance’s family for contributing this week’s healthy snack! We enjoyed wonderful choices throughout the week: from homemade pumpkin bread to fresh strawberries and yogurt.   Next week’s snack will be provided by me and the following week after Thanksgiving will be provided by Morgan’s family. Thanks to all for making our group snack possible the children are really enjoying it as well as benefiting from the opportunity to eat a shared healthy snack.
  • Outerwear:  Colder weather is headed our way.  If snow falls, please send in winter boots, mittens, and hats. Please help your child learn to zip up their jackets on their own.  It will help us get them ready to go outside more easily.

Election Day! November 7, 2012

Election Day!

Voting lines were longer than at the Town Hall,
but the children were patient and excited to vote!
Bryant tucks his ballot in the box
It's official, the polls are closed. You weren't the only ones to vote today. Your children also enjoyed voting! All the students in K-2 voted on the name for one of Kelly Meacham's calf's.

Kerridwyn peeks out from the
voting curtain.
Nominated names were: Caspar, Cookie and Columbus. This week we have discussed the concept of voting to help them understand democracy and we gave them the opportunity to vote. It gave the children an opportunity to experience voting first-hand. Democracy at work.  I will post the results of the tight race in Friday's newsletter. Stay tuned!

Taking turns to vote is citizenship in action.

WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS

Bryant takes a turn mashing the apples in the sieve to make applesauce.

On Wednesday, we made applesauce from the apples we picked on our field trip earlier in the month.  The children each had an opportunity cut an apple in half and then cut each half again to make quarters.  I helped each child carefully cut each apple.  We talked about safety and that we don’t cut apples at home without an adult.  They were very excited for their first baking project.  After cutting the apples we put them in a pot, added a little water and simmered them on a stove in the Health room.  After lunch we used a sieve and mashed the apples until the apple sauce streamed through the sieve into the mixing bowl. We added two tablespoons of cinnamon and a 1/4 cup of maple syrup.  We enjoyed the applesauce before the end of the day with festive cookies from Keira.

Phonics & Journal Writing:  This week’s letter sounds were /c/ and /k/ and /e/.  The /c/ and
Isaac writes about bats.
/k/ action is related to castanets. The children pretend to click castanets in the air.  The /e/ sound is the action of cracking an egg on the side of a bowl.   Continue to encourage your child to complete the workbook pages on a weekly basis. With two to three sounds being introduced each week, they don’t have to do a page every night, just about a page every other day.   They all seem eager to learn the new sounds and actions.
At Home Activity: Now that we have 3 different vowels, you can begin to play guessing games.  For instance, choose a consonant-vowel-consonant word like map.  Do the actions and see if they can guess the word.  If you don’t feel comfortable doing the actions, give them a c-v-c word and have them translate it silently into the actions.
Language Arts (and Science ! ):  November calls for another two ELA assessments.  November’s assessment which we worked on this week is related to informational text.  We read the non-fictional book, Bats, by Gail Gibbons. This book was packed full of information about different kinds of bats. The children thought about one new fact they may have learned and then drew a picture and wrote a sentence.  As we read about bats we focused on the /m/ share theme too. They are mammals, they eat moths, mosquitos and even mice.
The past several weeks of school have been spent exploring our kindergarten room with activities and lessons.  We read Mrs. Bindergarten has a Wild Day in Kindergarten and thought about all the different areas and learning spaces in our room.  We are beginning to be introduced to some sight words, so the children completed this sentence, “I like...” and completed the sentence with something they like about our room.  I learned they like the blocks, the dollhouse, housekeeping, show and tell (share) and me!

Teamwork in the blocks center.
Explorations:  The children have been enjoying engineering buildings and other structures in blocks and role-playing in housekeeping. Several have rediscovered the art station with stamps, coloring and cutting.  The doll house is also enjoyed by both boys and girls. Aside from exploring a variety of genres and exercising their growing brains, they are learning important lessons about sharing, solving problems, and getting along.  They are fast becoming a tight group of buddies.

Paige tastes the soup.
Share:  We enjoyed some fun /m/ shares: marbles, a magnet, a variety of Lego men, a toy motorcycle, a monster puppet, and even a mohawk hairstyle!  Next Week Share theme is the sound /n/. Please brainstorm with your child some things that begin with the sound /n/ and help them choose a share that fits our theme.  It can be a challenging but fun family activity, thank you!

WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS
We have enjoyed a very full week. With two mandated English Language Arts assessments (a new initiative from the Windsor Southeast Supervisory Union), an early dismissal,  two field trips,  and a Scholastic Book Fair, we had our work cut out for us! Our nature field trip on Wednesday to Mrs. White’s property enabled us to tackle a variety of topics, which we will be following up on over the course of the next few weeks as well as throughout the year.  An overarching objective is learning about our five senses, living and non-living things, and change over time.  We also discussed our natural resources and how to be respectful and mindful of the gifts that these resources offer us.  We combined both classes into one and divided them up into two mixed groups. While one group hiked the nature trail with Mrs. White to explore these themes the other group went with me to her little pond to investigate pond life. I read aloud:  In a Small, Small, Pond, by Denise Fleming, and we talked about creatures that make their home in ponds or visit this interesting habitat.  Seasonality is also important as we discussed what we will see and won’t see at this point in the year.  Afterward we broke into groups of two to observe the pond life  and try our hand at painting what we saw.  They all did an outstanding job with their beautiful watercolor paintings!  I noticed they all worked hard and put forth their best effort in this creative task.  We also dug up some pond muck and scooped pond water into containers to make observations later in our classroom.  We look forward to observing any microscopic creatures up close.  I will keep you posted on our discoveries.   Many thanks to Kerridwyn’s mom, Stacy Wilber, for coming on our field trip to help out!
Little Miss Muffet and the
Spider!
Language Arts (and Science ! ):  Nursery Rhymes play an important role in the kindergarten language arts curriculum.  This week we began reciting “Little Miss Muffet” and began exploring the topic of arachnids.  The children especially enjoyed taking turns role playing while we recited the rhyme.  We explored new vocabulary and even made curds from warming milk and adding a tablespoon of vinegar -- many liked it! Coming off of last week’s ELF science lesson studying insects, this was very timely.  We learned that spiders are different from insects in that they have 8 legs while insects have 6.  We made paper spiders which we used to decorate the hallway and bulletin board.
Morgan taps  words
to write a sentence in his journal.
Phonics & Journal Writing:  The children are enjoying learning the new letter sounds and actions. This week I introduced: /s/ and
/a/.  Starting next week we will begin to tap out words with the inclusion of our first vowel. Please note, the Phonics workbook is being sent home for your child to start working on the pages. We will begin with /s/ and
/a/ for this weekend. Feel free to have your child complete up to the first 6 pages if they are so inclined. However, having said that, it is by no means mandatory. I plan to introduce from 2-3 new letters a week so over time your child will be able to complete the workbook. My expectation is that they do one page a day during the week. Please keep the Phonics workbook in the neon bag so I can check on it and note their progress or challenges. I will also stamp completed pages and help them with letters that are more difficult  for them.
We are also working on making connections to the sounds we hear in words and stretching words out (with our writer’s gum-- your child can demonstrate!) to write what we know on paper. Having only introduced a few sounds we are just in the beginning stages, however, they are making wonderful progress!
A group digging effort.  Well done!
Garden:  We have finally dug up all our perennials and are getting our vegetable garden bed ready for the winter. I’d like to plant kale, spinach  and possibly garlic to be harvested in the spring. The children have enjoyed working together to clear the beds. They love to dig!
Share:  Our busy week made it more challenging to find time to squeeze in the /b/ shares.  If your child forgets to bring in their share on their assigned share day, please help them understand that we will try to squeeze it in another day. I will do my best to accommodate everyone.     Next Week Share theme is the sound /m/. Please brainstorm with your child some things that begin with the sound /m/ and help them choose a share that fits our theme. Thank you!

CALENDAR:

WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS
This week seemed to fly by at record speed with no school on Wednesday. We finished our study of the rainbow colors on Monday with the color purple. We have made a book of each color.  If your child comes home with the book, please sit down and read with them.  Have them point underneath each word as they read and if they seem ready have them frame sight words (is, are, etc.) using their two index fingers.
Autumn is here in full swing and with it we have transitioned from the study of the lifecycle of the butterfly to other cycles, for instance our field trip to Spring Brook Farm has opened the door to the lifecycle of the apple tree.   We are also beginning to talk about the changing and cycle of the seasons.  Our studies will begin to focus on how the change of seasons affect living things: people, animals and plants.
The children are working at sharing and taking turns. After snack if there is extra time, students are dismissed to the rug to look at books.  At first they had difficulty sharing books between them without a disagreement surfacing between 2 or 3 students. Now with more practice they are doing a much better job.  We are also working on manners, saying, “Excuse me” and apologizing.  Children at this age have a tendency to forget all that they have learned at home when they are at school amongst their friends. As a result, we work on reminding them to create a warm, inviting and friendly community.  Taking responsibility for their behavior and making smart choices is also a daily practice.

Phonics: In an effort to try to incorporate the use of the new phonics program (Fundations) I have had to make some recent adjustments.  I apologize for any confusion over the last week.  As it turns out I will be holding onto the yellow Jolly Phonics workbooks until I have introduced the first six Jolly Phonics letters so the workbook activities will be in sync with the letters introduced. The Purple Sound books will be going home every day so that your child can practice the sounds and actions daily.  Included in the Ziplock is a parent reference sheet which will familiarize you with the different actions for each sound. You can ask your child to tell you about the story that goes along with each sound. The Fundations information sheet that is included in the folder (Keep at Home Pocket) will help you understand the proper letter formation.  It will also provide additional helpful tips for you as you help your child in their journey to reading and writing. Please keep these sheets home for reference while returning the Ziplock daily.  I will write in new letter sounds on the Reading Log.  If you have any questions or comments you can write a note  in the comments column and I will try to get back to you within a day or two.
Thank you to Reid’s mom (Mrs. White’s Class and Lucia’s grandfather, (Mrs. White’s husband) for helping out with Thursday’s Apple Day The children enjoyed a variety of fun apple related activities.  They peeled and baked individual apple crisps, peeled and set aside apples for dehydration; listened to some stories about Johnny Appleseed, made painted apple prints, and learned about measurement and weight as well as estimation as they estimated and then counted the number of seeds in different apples.
Watching the ELF puppet show

ELF: Last week we also enjoyed our first ELF lesson with Conner’s mom (Lori), Kerridwyn’s mom (Stacey) and David Broder.  We learned about spiders and insects by watching a puppet show and doing a felt story activity and then making our own insects out of egg cartons and tissue paper.
The Firefighter and Fire Prevention day went very well last week.  The children enjoyed meeting the firemen and learning about how to get down low in a building in case there is a fire. They told the children not to be afraid of the fireman as he is there to help.  They told children they should make sure their families have meeting places in case there is a fire at home, and NEVER go back into a burning building once they have made it safely outside. They toured the outside of the firetruck and got to sit in the truck.

Share: The children this week brought in some fun shares that had the sound /t/.  Some notable /t/ shares were: a toy turtle, a Lego knight, a fire-stations, a trailer, a tanker truck, a trophy,  and TJ the Whale! Next Week Share theme is the sound /b/. Please brainstorm with your child some things that begin with the sound /b/ and help them choose a share that fits our theme. Thank you!
